Clipper Stad Amsterdam
The City of Amsterdam is a modern sailing ship built on a foundation of traditions. To put the Netherlands back on the map among foreign tallships, the idea for a new ship arose during SAIL Amsterdam 1995. As a symbol of the city’s mercantile spirit. Construction was an initiative of Randstad and the municipality of Amsterdam, offering young people employment, training and a unique experience. It was designed along the lines of the very fast, late-nineteenth-century clippers that sailed the world’s seas. The traditional-looking sailing ship is one of a kind. Everything on board exudes the atmosphere of rugged, nineteenth-century seafaring, and at the same time it has all the luxuries of this century. While the crew keeps the ship on course, our hosts serve delicious drinks and snacks from the bar on deck, prepared by the chef in his galley. The ship’s upper deck is the entire upper deck extending from the bow to the stern. It consists of the aft deck, the main deck and the forecastle deck. The beautiful chart house, the three huge masts, the lines on deck, the beautifully maintained teak woodwork: as soon as one enters the Stad Amsterdam, one goes back in time. Clipper Stad Amsterdam has no fewer than 31 sails!
