Shore Power

With shore power, PTA significantly reduces emissions and noise in the city centre from both sea- and river cruise vessels. By implementing this ahead of upcoming regulations, Amsterdam positions itself as one of the most progressive and green cruise ports in Europe, fully aligned with the climate ambitions of the City and the Port of Amsterdam.

Emission-free alongside for sea- and river cruise vessels

Since May 2025, Passenger Terminal Amsterdam (PTA) has been equipped with a shore power facility for one sea cruise vessel and up to eight river cruise vessels. The sea cruise system provides up to 16 MW of power, enabling ships to shut down their engines while docked, eliminating local emissions and significantly reducing noise. Each river cruise vessel has access to two Powerlocks.

Sea cruise vessels are actively encouraged to connect to shore power upon arrival at PTA, provided they are technically equipped to do so. Early adoption helps reduce emissions in the city centre and supports Amsterdam’s environmental objectives, in line with the ambitions of the Port of Amsterdam.

Use of shore power is mandatory for all river cruise vessels berthing at PTA. As the vast majority of the river cruise fleet is already shore power-ready, vessels are expected to connect immediately upon arrival.

As of 1 January 2027, use of shore power will be mandatory for all sea cruise vessels calling at PTA. Vessels that are not equipped with a certified shore power connection will no longer be permitted to berth at the terminal. With this measure, PTA is taking a proactive step by implementing the shore power requirement three years ahead of the European legislation, which mandates shore power use for sea cruise vessels starting in 2030.

Terms and Conditions

All sea cruise vessels connecting to shore power at PTA must comply with the applicable Terms & Conditions. These include technical requirements, safety procedures, operational responsibilities, and liability provisions related to the use of the shore power system.
