Today, the cruise ship Celebrity Eclipse, flying the Maltese flag, docked at Cruise Port Amsterdam (CPA). The ship is 315 metres long and can carry up to 2,850 passengers. A special feature is the Sky Observation Lounge, where floor-to-ceiling panoramic windows offer an impressive view of the sea. The Celebrity Eclipse is sailing from Amsterdam to Norway and back to Amsterdam. On Tuesday 2 June, the ship will be berthed at the CPA again.
Celebrity Eclipse is part of the Celebrity Cruises fleet. The company is undertaking sustainability initiatives, including the switch to shore power. Celebrity Eclipse has previously berthed at CPA using shore power. Today, technical maintenance work was carried out on the ship, meaning it was not possible to connect to shore power.
For CPA, the year 2026 is entirely dedicated to connecting as many ocean-going cruise ships as possible to shore power. The practical experience gained in 2026 is intended to ensure that shore power becomes the standard for ocean-going cruises in Amsterdam from 2027 onwards.
From 2027, CPA will require cruise ships to be connected to shore power whilst berthed at the terminal. This approach anticipates international regulations and positions CPA as a frontrunner in the global cruise industry in the field of sustainability.
By connecting ships to green electricity from the shore, generators can be switched off, resulting in lower emissions, less noise pollution and better air quality in the city.
Celebrity Eclipse is a light and spacious ship operated by Celebrity Cruises. Celebrity Cruises, part of the Royal Caribbean Group, aims to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050 and to commission an energy-neutral ship by 2035. Key sustainability initiatives include the switch to cleaner alternative fuels and shore power, the installation of solar panels and the reduction of plastic waste on board.
